I find that releasing music today can be a strange and disengaging experience. Even in the past ten years, the actual release somehow feels like less of an event. When you are nursing an idea for a few years, to see your work as a tiny blip on a music platform or social media feed can feel a little underwhelming.
The speed of it disappearing, or even reaching anyone, is depending on the invisible forces working in your favor that day. Especially when you are not so interested in these mechanics, it sometimes feels like a birthday party where no one is showing up. At other times it feels like a quiet and private goodbye.
You somehow learn to trust the choices you’ve made, your relationship with others along the way and what you’ve learned from them. To accept this final process is to accept that the music is not yours (anymore) and that’s ok.
It reminds me of the importance of the shared experience, the concert. And why I still enjoy making physical objects with music that are passed on. I am worried about the absence of credits online, the names of all the people that made the work come to life.
I wanted to thank you for leaving messages regarding What Does It Mean To Be Free. Tomorrow I will release a live @ Melkweg Amsterdam from our recent tour!

I’m not the one for a self congratulatory recap of the year on this platform. It’s been a challenging one.
Grateful for those who came to see a show or supported me by buying vinyls, I’m here to let you know that there will be a new track coming out this Friday called What Does It Mean To Be Free.
I was looking for a music of a softer and livelier kind that can’t be compressed into 3 minutes.
By giving freedom to the musicians in the studio, a one-take was recorded that I could not have planned in advance.
Thank you to saxophonist @maartenhogenhuis for his essential contribution to the song and @obiblanche, @simonsegers, @anderttysma and @annelottecoster for their unique identities.
Currently working on a follow up LP for A Collection Of Broken Ideas, I’m also compiling a live album with recordings from the more recent shows.
But first: The Inventory Of Our Desire - February 10th
(On Vinyl & CD designed by @timntim artistic dir. @ellen_treasure )
All my best,
Thomas
